Though there is a model with a 120G hard drive, the memory stick model is lighter and more efficient, as I'll explain.Īfter shooting 21 minutes of 1920x1080 video, I removed the 16GB memory stick and inserted it in the Sony 17-in-1 Multi-Card Reader/Writer which was connected into our Mac Pro 3.2GHz 8-core "Early 2008" system. The Sony records video at 1080/60i storing it on a Sony PRO Duo Memory Stick. We wanted something affordable (under $1000), small, and light that records in HD format. We chose the Sony HDR-CX12 Hand圜am for shooting our HD video.

How hard can that be? What hardware and software do we need? What pitfalls will we uncover?

Then we would edit it and burn a Blu-ray movie disc. If it is the latest Mac you have, well, call me paranoid if you wish, but don't you think it odd that just when Apple is promoting it's iCloud and removing what ever support for any optical drive the Mac ever had, together with the minimal support for BD that the Firm has given even up to now, one can't help wondering if your Mac wasn't intended to support external BDR and the problem you are experiencing is somehow been 'designed' into your iMac.We decided to embark on a quest to shoot and capture HD video using a consumer HD videocam. Regular hard drives do work on these adaptors.Įxactly what Mac are you having problems with? Could it be the very latest model? You may not be aware that you can add what kit you own in one of your profile pages so that we all know and you don't need to keep on mentioning it. I would really like some help getting this to work through the firewire ports.

The drive does work through USB 2 for recording. Latest firmwareġ2X External Blu-ray Reader / DVD Burner with Media Mac / PC / eSATA / FireWire 800 / FireWire 400 / USB 2.0 & 1.1 It does not work through the thunderbolt adaptor (Apple brand). No daisy chaining just thunderbolt to the BD drive. The thunderbolt to firewire adaptor cable does let the applications that write light scribe and BD burning see the drive but the data connectivity fails when one tries to do anything. This drive was working fine with my older 2009 iMac and firewire 800. I have a BD burner from OWC and the new iMac with ONLY Thunderbolt. Thanks in advance for your suggestions, wrote:īD burner does not work though thunfderbolt to firewire apple adaptor. I have a 1TB Buffalo Thunderbolt external drive which works well but it's hard to justify the price difference between thunderbolt and USB 3.0 I will have everything ready for the iMac if and when it's available. My problem is that I have tried watching BLU-RAY movies on the Macbook and all is well, except that I can't make my mind up about the software.Ĭould someone please suggest which one would be the best to purchase, as I have only tried the downloaded trials, and can't find a lot of difference in them, therefore your recommendations will assist me. I have purchased an external DVD BLU-RAY BURNER which works well with the MACBOOK, and hope to use it with the iMac. As mentioned previously I have graduated from a PC to a Macbook pro retina 15 and am waiting anxiously to purchase a 27" iMac as soon as they arrive.
